Radon Testing
Getting Your Home Tested for Radon
One of the most frequently asked questions we get asked at SPY Inspection Services is — what is radon? Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive soil gas that is odorless and tasteless, undetectable by human senses. Long-term exposure to radon can lead to an array of health problems. Because it cannot easily be detected, it is recommended that you have radon testing performed in any home before you sign on the dotted line.
How Radon Enters the Home
Radon is commonly found in homes with basements, slab-on-grade, and crawl space foundations. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise — practically every home that exists today has the potential for elevated radon levels. The dangerous gas primarily enters homes through cracks and other openings in the foundation, floor, and walls which have direct or indirect contact with the soil. From there, it can be spread throughout the house via air currents and pressure differences inside.
The Risks of Radon in Your Home
According to the Surgeon General, exposure to radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking. With more exposure comes more risk of developing lung cancer. For most people, a majority of their time is spent indoors, be it at their place of work or at home, which is why it’s so important to test for it! With SPY, radon gas measurements are quick and affordable and should certainly be considered during any real estate transaction.
